(20–21 December 2023, Baku, Azerbaijan)

Dedicated to the memory of Ziya Musa oghlu Bunyadov, Hero of the Soviet Union and full member of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences.

Academician Ziya Bunyadov was a medievalist historian and the founder of the Azerbaijani school of Arabic studies. His scientific activity developed in two directions: the study of the history of the feudalism period of the Near and Middle Eastern countries and the research, explanatory translation, and publication of the works of medieval authors on the history, science, and culture of the Near and Middle Eastern peoples. In Ziya Bunyadov's numerous writings (more than 450 scientific monographs, articles, reports, and annotated translations) on various fields of oriental studies, the social, political, cultural, and economic history of not only the Azerbaijani people but also the entire mediaeval Muslim world is being investigated. All his works are based on a deep and accurate analysis of the primary sources. However, some issues that he investigated are distinguished by their originality. Thanks to his rich and multifaceted scientific activity, the prominent scientist has made worthy contributions to the advancement of the science of history to a new stage in the republic of Azerbaijan. In addition to the fundamental studies he carried out on various periods of Azerbaijan's history as well as the translation of medieval sources, the extensive comments he wrote on them brought the scientist great fame.
